This dog is currently out of state but will be transported to New England shortly with no additional travel costs. The long distance adoption process includes talking to the foster they are living with in the south. Roughly 90% of our dogs are successfully long distance adopted and 10% adopted locally.
**Please read Hazel's entire profile, which includes a link to the adoption application at the end. Thank you!**
Meet Hazel - a 1 yr old, Foxhound mix, who weighs 50 pounds (as of 10/4/24). When we found this girl, she was in rough shape and incredibly malnourished and we weren't sure if she was going to make it. You can see from the pictures she was skin and bones, but she has made a miraculous recovery! Unfortunately because of what her body went through, she has very little hearing left. She had previously been adopted but the owners aren't able to properly care for her given her hearing impairment, and we're looking for someone who is able to give this girl a second chance!
UPDATE from her southern foster: Hazel is energetic. She gets along well with our other dogs. I would say that she will do well with younger dogs as our dog who is 10 tires easily and cannot keep up with her energy level. She is sweet and affectionate. She is not aggressive, but does alert when a stranger approaches. She has been doing much better in her training. She is house broken, crate trained and has slept out of it without damaging anything. She does like to chew, but she’s still a puppy. If she has plentiful chew toys this girl is set! Not once has she chewed on clothing or shoes. She needs a fenced area as she does not respond to vocal commands and likes to go on adventures-she always returns but it makes me fearful that she will get hit. She would benefit from a family who can give her lots of exercise. We invested in a collar designed for deaf dogs and it has been very effective.
Her foster shares: "Hazel is incredibly sweet and has so much love to give! Given the hound in her, she would do best with a fenced in yard where she can roam freely (since she has a bit of wanderlust). A person or family who has experience with deafness would be ideal to help set Hazel up for success! She is very friendly, and would love to find an active family to go on sniff-aris with! She is also doing great with the other pups in foster care. This girl has had such a rough start to life and she is looking for a second shot at love!"
All dogs are up to date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered at the time of adoption. All dogs require professional training to become the best family member they can be.

PLEASE READ: If a dog is listed, then s/he is currently available for adoption. Their information is correct to the best of our abilities and the information we have been given as of the day of posting. From time to time we receive new information/photos of a dog and we do recreate their listing, which means their old listing link will no longer be valid. If you are considering a dog but don't apply right away please make sure to search for the dog by name if the link you have no longer works.
Please note, GDRNE does not guarantee the breed of any dog or puppy unless stated that we have run DNA. All breeds listed are educated estimates. Note that if the dog is listed as an "Out of town pet" there are NOT additional transport fees - it is included in our adoption fee Our dogs are rescued from various situations. It is most likely that both their parents were strays and even if not, mixes of some sort and that their grandparents were mixes as well. The dog may have some genetic material of an American Staffordshire Terrier (pit bull). The dogs are usually mixes of many breeds, making them a breed all their own - a True and adorable American MUTT. If you are interested in this dog, you must submit an application. Great Dog is not a shelter so there is no building you can visit. Our dogs live in private foster homes until adopted.
