Meet Benji - a 4 year old, purebred Yorkshire Terrier, who weighs 8 pounds (as of 11/15/25). Benji was saved as a part of a police operation in Tennessee to shut down a backyard breeder/hoarding situation where he had been used as a male stud dog. Benji is ready to go to his new forever home as soon as possible and ready to start his next chapter!
UPDATE from his foster mom: Benji has been settling in well. He is the sweetest little man and he has stolen my heart so quickly. He craves attention. You can just tell that with his rough start to life and now having a taste of the good stuff, he just wants to soak it all in. He loves to cuddle up in a lap or be picked up and held. I look forward to seeing more of his playful side start to show once he fully decompresses.
He’s working on his house training. He’s very good about going potty outside right away when taken out but still has accidents inside too. I think he’s gonna learn quickly though and I suspect it might help once he is neutered as well. He walks confidently on a leash.
He doesn’t seem to be yappy like some Yorkies can be. He will occasionally bark at me when he wants me to pick him up, and he’ll whine/bark a little when first settling in his crate, but otherwise he’s a pretty quiet guy.
He co-exists fine with our 2 dogs and shows very little interest in them. He really just wants attention from his chosen person. He’s friendly with our kids (ages 8 and 11) and happily lets them pet him and pick him up.
I think he’d be best with a family who has someone home most of the time. He is already showing signs to me that he will be a dog that has some separation anxiety (again, realizing just how good love and attention feels now and wants it all!) so he would love his person/people to be around often. While he’s great with kids, I worry that a busy young family might not have the time to devote the amount of attention that he craves. He’s gonna be a Velcro dog for sure. An empty nester, retiree, etc could probably make the perfect companion for him.
"Benji does not seem to have the typical bossiness of his breed and he's more of a sweet little cuddle bug. He doesn't mind being dressed up and loves to be held and carried around. Benji just loves attention in general! He's been through a lot the past few weeks but once he comes out of the shock, we expect him to be an active and playful little guy. Benji appears to be the most confident of all the dogs we rescued in this operation. He knows he is awesome and is ready to show you! Due to his horrific upbringing and previous life, Benji has had no formal training and should go to a family ready to dedicate the time, energy, money and love that it will take to make him the best family member he can be."
All dogs are up to date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered at the time of adoption. All dogs require professional training to become the best family member they can be.

PLEASE READ: If a dog is listed, then s/he is currently available for adoption. Their information is correct to the best of our abilities and the information we have been given as of the day of posting. From time to time we receive new information/photos of a dog and we do recreate their listing, which means their old listing link will no longer be valid. If you are considering a dog but don't apply right away please make sure to search for the dog by name if the link you have no longer works.
Please note, GDRNE does not guarantee the breed of any dog or puppy unless stated that we have run DNA. All breeds listed are educated estimates. Note that if the dog is listed as an "Out of town pet" there are NOT additional transport fees - it is included in our adoption fee Our dogs are rescued from various situations. It is most likely that both their parents were strays and even if not, mixes of some sort and that their grandparents were mixes as well. The dog may have some genetic material of an American Staffordshire Terrier (pit bull). The dogs are usually mixes of many breeds, making them a breed all their own - a True and adorable American MUTT. If you are interested in this dog, you must submit an application. Great Dog is not a shelter so there is no building you can visit. Our dogs live in private foster homes until adopted.
